BTU Ventures – A Good Samaritan in Wolf’s Clothing

Media practitioners today tend to paint energy companies as the big bad wolf, the industry that is taking the environment down – and the human population with it – by one power plant after another. BTU Ventures, however, is different. A division of the BTU Group, this company is devoted to producing energy solutions and financing projects that can help the world solve its greatest energy problems. The company also specializes in developing plans for sustainable production of alternative sources of energy especially in poorer regions of North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In the more technologically advanced countries of the world, the company is particularly devoted to helping its smaller players build efficient power plants that run on coal or fossil fuel but without being a considerable threat to the environment.

Although the company has its main offices in Waltham, Massachusetts, it also maintains offices in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates to serve as its base for global operations. In the last ten years, the company has spent a good amount of its time and resources in developing IPPS or impendent power producers in the Middle East, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Tunisia. For these projects to push through, BTU Ventures made a 60% equity investment based on a Carthage Power Company project that was valued at $260M. Based in Tunisia, the Carthage Power Company was eventually able to sustain a 471MW production of electricity for 2009, which was responsible for providing power to 23% of Tunisia’s private households and businesses.
